Mastermind of melancholy Jari Lindholm releases his first solo instrumental album Trajectories comprised of 7 tracks in the midst of the global pandemic crisis. Jari would spend writing new material in his cabin outside of Stockholm thus the feeling of isolation is certainly present on the album amongst nostalgia and sense of longing for the days of lost. So let us delve deeper into the record and take a look at some of its highlights.
The album opens with a song Derelict that certainly sets the tone for the whole record. When you hear the intro riff for the first time you may think you're listening to Exgenesis, another atmospheric doom metal project of Jari's. However towards the verse as the lead guitar kicks in the song changes its mood and turns into rather a melodic doom in vein of Slumber (Jari's former band). In fact, the lead guitar is the main instrument on the entire album that paints various layers of soundscapes in the songs. Derelict is a wonderful roller-coaster of a song as it takes its listener through various moods. It starts pretty groovy further on it takes on a melodic twist then it slows down again just to crush down on you with a breathtaking tremolo towards the end.
The following track The Underpass has some serious Seas of Years vibes. another post-rock project of Jari that was permanently disbanded last year. It's most likely the fastest song on the album considering that most tracks are in the mid tempo. It features some great drumming by Xinês, stellar rhythm guitars and superb lead parts.
The third track Nostalgia sounds as if it was taken out of the Enshine repertoire. It is as good as some of the instrumental tracks from the previous Enshine records such as Constellation and Apex. Moreover, these three tracks must be placed into a time capsule since it is easily the most tear-dropping post metal tracks of all time.
Mare Balticum is an interlude song in vein of Astrarium Part 1 and 2 from both Enshine records. It serves as an entr'acte between the first and second part of the album.
July
Sundown is somewhat resembles of Derelict. The intro sounds akin to Exgenesis up until Jari's hypnotizing lead guitar changes the mood and makes me long for summer and those July sundowns.
Disequilibrium is the longest track on the album and it got to be my favorite from the entire record. This song embodies everything that Jari is known for; stellar solos, great use of Ebow, crushing melodies and even some oriental percussions.
The last song on the album entitled Utopias Sista Vila can be translated from Swedish as "Last Shelter of Utopia". The track is a mixture of Seas
of Years and Enshine in the nutshell. The track is filled with some beautiful harmonies and mesmerizing lead guitar parts.
To summarize it I would call Trajectories a retrospective and somewhat personal album from Jari Lindholm.
Don't expect to hear anything revolutionary or progressive on this
record. Jari delivers precisely what we all anticipate from his every
release which is a stellar atmospheric post metal with abundance of his
trademark guitar sound in every track.
