Interview with Sébastien Pierre from Fractal Gates

 1. What’s the main theme of the new album “The Light That Shines”?

Seb: This new album name is a direct sequel to Beyond The Self. It explores the world of self-awareness through the metaphorical Light that we can find dwelling inside of us. As seen in the visuals, each track reflects a particular and detailed form of scenario, still mixing sci-fi and introspection as dual-meaning lyrical themes. Our music is about the strength of hope, and the walls of fortitude to breach in order to reach a deeper Self.

2. How did you evolve as the band over the years? Did you add new elements or any experiments on your new record?

Seb: I would say that this album contains more synths than the two previous ones, especially as it can be heard on Faceless. It allowed us to have a more cyberpunk approach in the concerned parts, directly inspired by videogames and movie soundtracks, such as Blade Runner and Mass Effect. The other main difference is the tempo, which is 20bpm faster average than Beyond The Self, which was already faster than ASC. We wanted to ride a rock-n-roll wave along the more traditional melodeath vibe.

3. Will you be touring to support your new album?

Seb: We are still focusing at the moment on the release itself, but we will see if good opportunities arise.

4. So you had Jari Lindholm record his signature solo on your new album.Any other special guest appearances on the album? Did Dan Swano record his vocals this time as well?

Seb: Ben Ellis from Scar Symmetry as well recorded a lead solo, and a friend of the band, Jérôme Boumendil. Dan unfortunately wasn’t able to make a vocal guest this time. And our two guitarists as well made their own solos.

5. How often do you rehearse together?

Seb: Lately we don’t, most of us being too busy with work and personal life. Other case our routine was rehearsing once every two weeks or twice a week, depending on the deadlines.

6. What was your most memorable gig and where did it take place?

Seb: I think all other members will agree with me, Brest (North of France) was our most rewarding gig, the alchemy with the crowd, the way the flow kept being natural, is what makes it unforgettable moment.

7. Do you enjoy listening to other progressive melodic death metal acts? If yes, which band/albums would you recommend to someone who likes FG and wants to listen to similar type of music?

Seb: Personally I have not been listening too many new metal bands lately, enjoying different styles like synthwave, trance, AOR, and OSTs. My favorite recent metal discovery still remains Harakiri for the Sky, their latest album is a grower and is the album of the year to me. They have been a source of inspiration for our third album.

8. What do you do outside of music?

Seb: I’m a 2D-3D artist for a living.

9. Do you have hopes for human race? Where are we going? Are we slowly going towards self extinction? What are your thoughts on Mars colonization?

I think we are still into an ascending potential, and that in the near future mankind will have to face tight choices to make, especially linked to the evolving side of Artificial Intelligence. I think colonizing other planets is just a beginning for all advanced sentient species, and as well a matter of survival in the long term. Everything material dies, even a sun, and all planets orbiting it. The natural purpose of life is expanding its ability to communicate, explore, and adapt itself under new horizons. Mankind is able of making the worst and the best. My feelings are mixed with pessimism and hope. Science fiction is becoming more and more the vanguard of hard science. Our generations are foreseeing the dawn of a new era, which will either lead us to evolution or extinction.

10. What’s the future of Fractal Gates?

Seb: We don’t really know yet, but the desire of creating new musical worlds is definitely not gone.
